Third Thursday: The Rev. George S. Brown
The Rev. George S. Brown, Missionary to Africa and First African American Methodist Pastor in Vermont with Pat Thompson
This talk will explore George S. Brown's missionary work in Africa (1836-1842) which led to his expulsion from the Methodist Episcopal Church and how that eventually led to his coming to Vermont and organizing the Wolcott Methodist Church in 1855. Although a successful missionary in Africa, Brown became embroiled in a political battle over taxes which were being charge on goods being shipped to Liberia from America and encountered a good deal of racism and white privilege which continued for ten years after his return to America. It was not until he came to Vermont in 1853, that his ministry was finally accepted, and he was able to organize a white congregation that apparently loved and supported him in 1855. The following year (1856) Brown oversaw the construction of the current church building. Along with the details of his missionary work and ministry, Thompson will share some of how she was able to recover George S. Brown's story that had long lost for over 150 years.
Co-sponsored by the Center for Research on Vermont. This talk will take place in Waterman Lounge (Waterman Building) on the UVM Campus in Burlington.
