Accessory Belt

Black leather belt with attached cartridge box, bayonet, and bayonet scabbard. The belt has a bras guide on one end and two buckley holes on the other.

The cartridge box consists of a leather pouch stretched around a wooden box insert with 20 drilled holes for storing cartridges. Another small, envelope-style pouch is attached to the front of the cartridge box. The cartridge box pouch secures with a flap that covers the whole front, and secures with a strap on a brass stud. The flap is stamped "DIN[illeg] & [illeg]TUG MAKERS NEW YORK". There are two buckles on the bottom of the box.

The bayonet scabbard is leather with rivets and a brass tip. The leather is stamped, "HOOVER CAL[ILLEG] CO NEW YORK".

Admiral George Dewey

This portrait is oval in shape and depicts an older man who is dressed in a uniform. He is wearing a white jacket with shoulder straps and stars, as well as a white hat with a black visor. The visor of the hat features a gold filigree design. The man has white hair and a white mustache. The portrait is signed with the words "For Mrs. George Fabyan with the best wishes of George Dewey". There is an additional autograph ("George Dewey") at the bottom center, below the portrait.

Black and gold woven cord. The cord loops three times, and the loops are held together by a woven ring. The two ends are capped with large, acorn-shaped tags or aglets, covered in the same woven material as the cords.

Ammunition Belt

Collection of eight pins and one button. Six pins are plastic bars with yellow grounds and the inscriptions, "PISTOL EXPERT", "PISTOL SHARPSHOOTER", "PISTOL MARKSMAN", "RIFLE EXPERT", "RIFLER SHARPSHOOTER", and "RIFLE MARKSMAN". One pin is metal and formed into the shape of the letters "VT." One pin is a bar pin wrapped in green grosgrain ribbon with yellow stripes on either side and two metal 5-pointed stars. The Button is a gold-toned button with the insignia of the Vermont State Guard (a stag's head).

Award Plaque

Wooden plaque with etched and printed, white colored, metal sheet attached with award information. From the top, there is a Civil Air Patrol yellow, blue and red insignia, the big blue letters that read, "Civil Air Patrol honors." The honoree's name, "William V. Mason" appears in black print in an outlined banner. The award is specified in blue lettering, "For Distinguished Service as Commander." In another blue-outlined banner, the dates of services are listed -- Nov. 1942- Nov. 1947. The plaque is signed By Paul C. Ashworth, Colonel, USAF, National Commander. On the back, in faint lettering, the source of the plaque is listed: Texas Trophy Co., behind South Park bowling lanes, 5222 Nassau Road, Houston 21, Texas, MI9-7488 or MI5-5179 (phone numbers).

Large, stamped metal hat badge in the shape of a radiating the star. The central circle is black with the number 1 in gold. Surround the the central circle is the inscription, "RUTLAND.LIGHT.GUARD 1858". The reverse has a hollow tube at the center like a plume holder, and a sharp metal pin bent inward on the left side.

The Rutland Light Guard, a state uniformed militia, was organized on Nov. 13, 1858 as a state, uniformed militia. William Young Warren Ripley became its captain in 1859. When Ripley became the first Vermonter to officially volunteer for the Union Army, his speech about his decision at the Rutland Town Hall inspired the Light Guard to volunteer as Company K of the 1st Regiment of Vermont Volunteers in May of 1861.

To facilitate hanging, there are brass grommets located at the two top corners of the banner.

There is a blue flocked border around all four edges and the top edge is stitched around a wooden dowel tipped with plastic finials. A multi-colored cord is tied to either end of the dowel for hanging and ends with tassels on both sides.

The flag is made of a white satin-woven synthetic fabric; both the red and blue elements are a thick plastic-like substance applied to the surface of the fabric. The top edge has been folded over and there is a dowel through it. There is a synthetic gold cord applied to either end of the dowel to hang it by. Each end of the dowel is capped with a small, gold-toned plastic spear tip.

Worn by Lyman Enos. Knapp, born in Somerset, Vt. on Nov. 5, 1837. he died in Seattle, WA on Oct. 9, 1904. Knapp was a graduate of Middle College. He fought in the Civil War and was wounded three times. He was brevetted to the rank of lieutenant colonel. After the war and a short stint teaching at Burr and Burton Academy in Manchester, he became editor of the Middlebury Register, a job he held for 13 years. At the same time he read the law and was admitted to the bar in 1876. He served in the Vermont House of Representatives 1886-87 and was a judge of probate for a decade. He was appointed governor of Alaska in 1889 by President Harrison. He moved to Seattle after completing his time as governor and began practicing law again.

Miniature New Testament Bible. The book is bound in black leather and the cover secures closed with a flap opposite the binding. The flap would be tied with a cord inserted through two holes on the front cover, now missing.

Owned by Almeron C. Inman during the Civil War. The bible was stolen from Inman's knapsack by a Confederate soldier during the Battle of Wilderness. Years later, after Inman's associate Dr. E. J. Foster placed an advertisement in a newspaper in Fredericksburg, Virginia, asking for the Bible's return, Davis B. Berry gave it back.

Small book with missing cover. There are two holes in the book that increase in size toward the interior. The book contains and alphabetical list of English words, with no definitions or additional information.

Think flight boots. The boots have rubber soles and lower half of the upper is covered in a thick layer of rubber. From the top of the foot up, the uppers are constructed out of leather. They secure at the top with two zippers, one zipping upward and the other downward, over a wide tongue. The upward zipper pull has a leather tie, and the downward zipper pull has a wide leather strap that secures to the put with a metal snap. The interior is lined with thick lamb's wool fleece.

Tall canvas and leather boots with fleece lining and a strap at the calf to cinch. Boots belonged to Edgar Grafton Carlisle (1908-1994) during his military service.
The boots have canvas/leather loops inside that could be used to help pull on the boots. On the leather backside of the loop is a crown, the initials A.M., size 9, fitting 6 and B87426/4. The name Carlisle is written in ink on the canvas side. On the other loop in each boot, on the leather, are the initials A. I. D. 7. M. D.

Edgar Grafton Carlisle, husband of Lilian Baker Carlisle, was born in Maryland. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1928. He entered the U.S. Army as an aviation cadet earning reserve office's commission and aviator's wings in 1930. He became a lieutenant in the 28th division aviation unit of the Pennsylvania national Guard and commanded the 103rd Photo Section. In September of 1940, Carlisle entered the Royal Air Force Ferry Command, which meant he had to resign his reserve commission in the U.S Army.

Breast Collar

Breast collar, or breastplate, consisting of a breastplate, girthstrap and martingale attachment. The piece has leather construction with a large shield in center. The shield is made of leather and covered with enameled leather that is quite degraded. Affixed to the shield is an eagle, most likely of made of brass. The piece has brass buckles. The side pieces of the breastplate have a layer of enameled (colored) leather sewn to base layer that is cracked and in some places is detached from base layer. The girthstrap has torn off.

Bridle

Bridle consisting of headstall and bit. The leather headstall has two cast metal rosettes with eagles. There are remnants of colored enameled leather on the browband. There are two sets of reins: one sewn together at the ends and one buckled. The martingale attachment that attaches to a breastplate is strung through lower set of reins by brass rings. Two leather round rein stops are strung through the lower set of reins. The iron bit is brass plated with two large eagle bosses on either side.

Bucket

A World War II era canvas water bucket. It has metal rings at the top and bottom, encased in heavy canvas and a padded handle.

This canvas bucket was among the WWII equipment used by Lawrence Rossi (1918-2025) of Barre during his three years of service in the Pacific Theater. Rossi served in the Army as a 1st Lieutenant with the 172nd Infantry. After he was discharged in 1946 he continued to serve in the Vermont National Guard and was reactivated to serve in the Korean War. He retired as a Major from the Vermont National Guard in 1963.

Round wooden canteen with metal bands around it. The side is engraved with several letters, the neatest being "E.A" in the center. The letters "L.G." are engraved larger toward the top, and the letter W is engraved in several places with different orientations.

Round metal canteen molded on both sides with a bullseye design. There are three brackets around the edge with a long strap of cotton webbing through them, creating a carrying strap. The strap is embroidered with the inscription, "E. C. Hall Co. G. 10th VT", followed by a cross indicating the sixth corps, and the year, "186[illeg]". The center top of the canteen has a short metal spout, sealed with a cork topper. The neck of the spout bears the inscription, "LADJ. HALL ROH. [illeg]."

Rossi served in the Army as a 1st Lieutenant with the 172nd Infantry. After he was discharged in 1946 he continued to serve in the Vermont National Guard and was reactivated to serve in the Korean War. He retired as a Major from the Vermont National Guard in 1963.

Round, tin canteen with a pouring/drinking spout at the center top. There is no textile cover. The label, "Walter CoE. 15 Regt. Vt. Vol Fifer" is scratched into the neck of the spout. There is a cork stopper with a metal ring. The cork is attached to a side bracket with a chain. Three side brackets hold a long, woven strap around the seam of the canteen.

Navy blue wool nurse's cape with red wool lining. It opens at the center front and secures just below the neckline with two self-fabric straps that attach to buttons on either side of the opening. It has a short standing collar embroidered with the inscriptions "M.H.M.H." on the right and "46" on the left (both in yellow). There is an interior slit pocket on the left side. A sewn-in tag at the back neckline reads, "Marvine Neitzel Corp. Quality Capes and Nurses' Apparel Troy, N.Y. U.S.A." and three additional tags create the initials "A E B" with one letter on each tag.

Strong Aug 29, 1865".

It secures up the center front with a single line of large, brass post-backed buttons (9). There are 2 rows of decorative brass buttons that span from the shoulders to the center waist. The coat has a high collar decorated with 4 brass buttons on either side of the center front opening. The sleeves are set into the bodice with gathers at the top, creating a slight rise, and the arms are slightly bent forward. There are narrow cuffs decorated with large brass buttons along the cuff edge. The body of the coat is lined with undyed cotton.

Walter/CoE 15" is hand inked onto the lining of the proper left sleeve near the shoulder. The inscription "U. S. Inspector/Wm. Phillips/[illeg]". The coat is lined in wool with canvas pockets attached to the interior on each side.

The upper right arm has a round white patch with an embroidered red cross in the center and the words, "AMERICAN RED CROSS SERVICE", around the edge. The lower right arm has five embroidered patches: three chevrons and two bars. The coat is lined in blue satin.

The sleeves have tabs and smaller buttons near the cuffs for cinching closed. The collar facing is bound and has buttonholes for attaching a removable liner. There is a tag attached tot he facing witht he name "Turner" written in ink, and the name "Marion I. Turner" on the reverse. The lining is stenciled in white with the name, "M. I. TURNER". There is a matching, self-fabric belt with a blue plastic buckle.

The upper left sleeve has two patches: a bar with the inscription "AIRBORNE", and a black circle with a yellow, four-towed talon (the insignia of the 17th Airborne).

Wooden cribbage board. The front of the board has four rows of 30 holes around the outside with two additional holes in the center of each short end. There are five holes along the center of the board, each on an etched line.

The back of the board is pasted with a piece of paper bearing the handwritten inscription, "This Cribbage Board was made from a fence rail, pierced with musket balls during the battle of Antietam, September Seventeenth 1862. The rail was taken from a fence in in front of the 2nd division of the 6th corps and the board was cut out and made by a private soldier in Batt's Brigade."

Wooden crossbow frame. The frame is shaped similarly to a long gun with two square holes through one end. It is marked, "E. S. 1781".
