Carousel Animal
Interpretative Labels
Vermonters celebrated the state's bicentennial in 1991 in a variety of ways. Thomas Hurd of Montpelier decided to carve this carousel horse, which he called the"one and only Vermont Bicentennial Morgan Horse." He modeled it after a 1917 design commonly found at county fairs. This horse if made from 30 layers of Vermont basswood laminated together, and took more than 200 hours to complete. The 13 jewels aruond the horse's neck represent the 13 states in 1791 and the large jewel on the horse's chest represents Vermont as the 14th state.

Catamount (Puma concolor), 1881 Barnard, Vermont Gift of Col. John B. Mead, #1960.8 The cougar, mountain lion, puma, or catamount as it’s known in Vermont, was once considered such a threat to livestock that it was hunted to extinction. Today the catamount has become a beloved symbol of Vermont and lives on in art, literature, and popular culture. Alexander Crowell killed this catamount on Thanksgiving Day, 1881 in Barnard, Vermont. Responding to complaints of a predator eating sheep, a small group of hunters tracked this catamount all day through its tracks in the snow. Crowell first shot the animal in the leg with the shotgun (1968.15) and then used a borrowed rifle to shoot the catamount in the head. Newspaper reports called the catamount (or panther) the largest ever seen in the state. The “Monster Panther” was preserved and exhibited around the state. Since 1886, the catamount has been on display at the Vermont State House and at the Vermont Historical Society. Though prevalent in other parts of the continent, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has declared the cougar extinct in most of the east. However, sightings of the elusive animal continue. Do you have a catamount story?

In 1949, the French people shipped 49 boxcars filled with tokens of gratitude for the trainloads of food, clothing, and medicine that the United States had sent in 1947 to assist France's recovery following World War II. The "Merci Train," a response to the "American Friendship Train," arrived in February. There was an antique boxcar full of gifts and messages for each of the 48 states, plus one for Hawaii and the District of Columbia to share. Vermont's boxcar arrived in the state aboard a flatbed car on February 9. It made short stops in Brattleboro, Bellows Falls, and White River Junction on its way to Montpelier. The official welcoming ceremony took place on February 10, and included Governor Ernest W. Gibson Jr. and Count Max de Montalembert, the French vice-consul in Boston. Bermont's boxcar contained hundreds of items--dolls, toys, paintings, crafts, pencil boxes, embroidered collars, wooden puppets, ornamental fans, paintings, vases, trinkets, books, cards, and letters. Some of the artwork was given to the Fleming Museum at the University of Vermont in Burlington, some French books to Middlebury College, and individual items were sent via legislators to towns and libraries throughout the state. The remainder--nearly 200 items--has been in the custody of and stored at the Vermont Historical Society. Pieces from the collection have been displayed twice since they arrived in that boxcar 70 years ago--in the 1950s and in 1988.
